Claddagh World Cup Final 2017

Excitement was at fever pitch yesterday in Stadio del Dominico as the Claddagh World Cup reached its final with an epic showdown between Argentina and Germany. Skill, dogged persistence, high drama, agony and joy were all to be seen as each team gave everything to a game in which either could have emerged deserving winners.

Germany dominated the first half, with a hailstorm of shots clattering into the Argentinian net. Despite their best efforts, Argentina could formulate no effective response to this relentless onslaught, and entered the second half as underdogs without much prospect of finding the upper hand.

To everyone's surprise, though, the South Americans finally found their mojo, and staged a dogged and ever-more confident comeback as the final whistle drew closer. Again and again, the ball rocketed past the German keeper, leaving the Europeans in despair - and the Argentinian fans in ecstasy.

With the able Mr. Rogers refereeing, both teams played fairly and gave everything in pursuit of victory, but there could be only one winner: Argentina takes the Claddagh World Cup for 2017.

Meanwhile, spectators were entertained at the breaks by the novelty of witnessing highly sporting and supremely skilled demo matches between teachers and students.

Bike Week Fun

The children in Claddagh have had some great two-wheeled fun this week for National Bike Week. We've had bike skills workshops, a maintenance workshop from An Mheitheal Rothar, and did Claddagh School proud when over 70 children and staff participated in the City Lunchtime Cycle. We were very proud of the children, who showed how far they have come in developing their cycling skills and safety awareness on the open road.

Itadakimasu! (Let's eat!)

Rang a IV pictured having lunch at Tamodachi Japanese restaurant on Eglinton Street, where they were treated to a sushi-making demonstration by head chef Liam Wang, before getting to enjoy a fresh, healthy sushi lunch featuring salmon, avocado and cucumber. The children visited the restaurant to celebrate finishing a project on Japan.

Thanks so much to Liam, who has over 20 years experience working in Japan as a chef, and to Teresa, who organised the visit with us, for a very yummy, great-value lunch.

Lots of clean plates - we will definitely be back!

We were delighted to welcome Mairéad McGuinness MEP, Vice-President of the European Parliament, to the school as part of our celebrations to mark Europe Day and the successful completion of our two-year Erasmus+ project on health and well-being for both staff and students.

Ms. McGuinness spoke eloquently to the children about the founding dream of the European Union - all the countries of Europe working together peacefully for each other's benefit - and asked them to remember its importance as they grow up.

She was also treated to a number of dances our children had learned as part of the Erasmus+ project, and some beautiful singing from the school choir. Not exactly a stuffy politician, Ms. McGuinness even joined our musicians Mr. Kelly, Ms. Fahy and Ms. Browne for an impromptu sing-song before she left!

Cúirt Labs

Children from Rang 1 - Rang 6 were in luck this week - everyone had an opportunity to visit the amazing Cúirt Labs in the wonderful Galway Arts Centre on Dominick St.

Featuring writing, reading, drawing, dance, music and interesting discussion, the Labs had something interesting for everyone. It is absolutley fantastic that our children have the opportunity to experience such a range of different cultural activities - all just a short walk up the road, and entirely for free!

Thanks very much to Cúirt and everyone at the Galway Arts Centre for all their work in making this such an enjoyable experience for all the children.
