Braving the elements, doing us proud

The children of the mighty Claddagh School Band were not deterred by the atrocious weather conditions in the St. Patrick's Day Parade 2017. They nailed their courage to the sticking place and donned their capes, before marching through the city, treating the thousands of very wet spectators to a spirited show of both music and true grit.

Enjoy our three galleries of photos below, which we might call, in chronological order: "Dry", "Wet" and "Soaking"!

Well done, one and all - we couldn't be more proud of you!

Rosa Parks by Jena Deegan, 4th Class

Rosa Parks is not somebody you will know, like Ed Sheeran, Little Mix or Lionel Messi. Rosa Parks is not a singer or a sports star but she is a hero. Let me tell you why......

She was born on February the 4th 1913 in Alabama, America. She had a little brother and a nice Mom and Dad. She lived on a farm. When she was young she was scared of a group called the Klu Klux Klan. The KKK did very hateful things to black people like burning their homes and beating them up!

During this time, the place where Rosa lived was segregated. This means that things were different for white people and black people. They had different schools, churches and shops and black people were not treated equally. When Rosa took the bus to work she would have to sit at the back because she was black. Sometimes she would have to stand, even if there were seats at the front. Those seats were only for white people. One day Rosa was sitting on the bus when a white man got on. The bus driver told Rosa to get up and give him her seat. Rosa was so angry and she was sick of being treated differently just because of the colour of her skin. She would not give up her seat so the bus driver called the police. She got arrested for breaking the law!

From this day on, Rosa led other black people in protests and marches. They all decided to boycott the buses. This means they would not ride the bus anymore. This lasted for over a year! Finally the segregation laws in Alabama came to an end because of their actions. Rosa Parkes is a hero because she fought for equal rights and she made a difference.

Junior Curators - Our labels at Galway City Museum

The children of Mr. Leonard's Rang a IV were delighted to see the results of their collaboration with Galway City Museum when they visited today.

As part of a joint project between the Museum and Claddagh School, the children had examined artefacts before writing and drawing their own personalised labels. Those labels are now on display in the Museum for all to see.

Well done everyone!

Hurling Blitz Report

Written by Jena Deegan (4th Class)

On Monday 13th of February, Children from 3rd and 4th class took part in a hurling blitz in Pearse Stadium. We travelled by bus with Mr. Mannion and Mr. Rodgers. There were about 5 different schools taking part but some left early. We played in 3 matches and in the first one we did'nt play very well. We improved a lot in our second game and in the final match, it was a tight game at the start but in the end BushyPark took the lead and won the game. It was a great experience to play in the stadium.

Handball Tournament Report

Written by Robyn Deegan & Aoife Kelly

This week on the 16th of February 2017 two Claddagh teams went to the Knocknacarra Community Centre to represent our school in an inter-schools’ U12 mixed Olympic handball tournament. We were giddy and excited as the selected teams travelled from the school in John Cotters’ bus.

Our two teams were called Claddagh Orange Team and Claddagh Green Team. Each team was made up of three girls and three boys but our squads were much bigger with many players from 5th and 6th classes.  Matches only lasted 6 minutes with no half-time breaks, so a fast start was very important in all games. The groups contained some tough opposition with Cregmore NS, Garden Field NS, Knocknacarra NS and the Attymon School who had a long journey to travel to the venue.

Our Orange Team were up first and drew three matches straight. The Green Team had better luck and won all their matches except for the last one against Garden Field. In fact Garden Field were the strongest team in the whole tournament. Only one team from each group advanced to the play off. We were nervous but channelled this energy into concentrating at all times on the handball court as Mr. Geraghty had told us.

Our last game against Knocknacarra was the decider for the Green Team. It was very exciting. The score at full-time was two all.  Extra time would now decide our team’s fate. That was equally nail biting! It was all square after extra-time and the golden goal rule would go against us as Knocknacarra got off to a quick start and scored straight away. We were gutted and very disappointed. To have come so far but yet to leave empty handed.

When we came off the pitch we found out that we had qualified for the shield. When we heard this we were all so happy with that outcome. We will have another day out!Even though it was a loss for the Claddagh, it was still a great day and we are planning to train really hard and improve on our performance for the shield tournament.
