Get Creative
Apart from the obvious artistic skills, getting arty also improves fine motor skills, hand-eye co-ordination, brain development and - perhaps most importantly at the moment - is hugely relaxing.

Get POP-ARTY with Claes Oldenberg
Claes Oldenberg is an American sculptor, He is best known for his large sculptures of everyday objects. He is also famous for his soft sculptures of everyday objects, especially food.
Claes Oldenberg is part of an art movement called POP ART. This was an art movement that began in America and Britain in the 1960s, where artists made art of everyday objects or famous people that was very realistic and often super-large. This highlighted the art in the everyday and also to highlight fast food, mass production and shallow celebrity.
Before the 1960's food was more wholesome and you would only be famous if you did something extraordinary or had a talent. Pop Art was also the time when comic strip became an art form.
Claes Oldenberg was born in Sweden in 1929 but moved to Chicago as a child. He is still making art at 91 years of age and lives in New York. Claes has one daughter but his wife has passed away. He is an artist that likes people and has lots of friends.
Why not try:
Watching the videos below.
Looking up Claes Oldenberg yourself and see what you can find out about him.
Using Márla or play dough make a sculpture of Claes's food or perhaps your favourite food. Think carefully about the colours you will use, the size of the sculpture.
Using clean used packaging, can you build a sculpture of an everyday item like a knife for example? Again, consider the colours and size carefully.
Using old magazine pictures or newspaper, tear out colours, stick them on old cereal box card and build an Oldenberg sandwich.
Send me pics of your POP Art sculptures. smyth_michelle@hotmail.com.
Have fun!!
